Visiting the Merlion and Breakfast at Ya Kun Kaya Toast

Our third day—and the final day of our trip—was blessed with beautiful weather, so we started the morning by visiting the Merlion.

The Merlion was once widely known in Japan as one of the “World’s Three Most Disappointing Tourist Attractions,” so I went there expecting to be thoroughly underwhelmed. Instead, I found a magnificent white statue standing proudly with Marina Bay Sands across the water. It was much larger than I had imagined, and the stream of water from its mouth was surprisingly powerful.

It didn’t disappoint me at all.

Ironically, I was disappointed that I wasn’t disappointed.

Later, after returning home, I looked into why the Merlion had earned such an unfortunate reputation. It turns out there were two main reasons:

• Its original location made it difficult to view the statue from the front.
• Mechanical problems frequently stopped the water from flowing.

Today, however, the statue has been relocated and the water feature works continuously, so it no longer deserves its old reputation.

After enjoying the Merlion, we walked to Raffles Place Park and stopped by Ya Kun Kaya Toast for breakfast. We ordered French toast and steamed bread, and both were excellent.

Relaxing at The Westin Singapore

After breakfast, we returned to The Westin Singapore and spent some time swimming in the pool.

At the poolside, a lesbian couple was taking photos of each other with their phones. Every time one of them pressed the shutter button, the other would enthusiastically shout things like, “Wow, super sexy!” or “Gorgeous!” Watching them made me think they were both excellent photographers.

Bak Kut Teh and Musang King Durian

In the afternoon, we visited Lau Pa Sat, one of Singapore’s famous hawker centers. It felt like a huge, clean food court, but since there was no air conditioning, it seemed like the kind of place that could be tough to enjoy unless you still had plenty of energy left.

We didn’t eat there, though. Instead, we headed to a restaurant recommended by a friend: NG AH SIO Bak Kut Teh.

Bak kut teh appears in practically every Singapore guidebook, so I had been looking forward to trying it. My very first impression was, “Wow… that’s a lot of pepper.”

Then I dipped a piece of youtiao (Chinese fried dough) into the soup.

To my surprise, it was absolutely delicious.

Honestly, I thought the soup-soaked fried dough tasted even better than the wonderfully tender pork.

Our meal—two bowls of bak kut teh, rice, youtiao, and two soft drinks—came to SGD 43.76.

After lunch, we walked next door to Combat Durian.

One of the main reasons I had planned this trip in June was to finally give durian another chance.

I’d already tried durian three times before—in Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam—and every single experience had ended with the same reaction:

“Ugh… this is tough.”

However, one of my friends absolutely loves durian and never stops talking about how delicious it is. Every time I listened to her, I couldn’t help thinking that maybe I had simply never eaten a really good one.

I’d heard that June is one of the best seasons in Singapore to find naturally ripened durians that have fallen from the tree, so I’d long decided that if I were ever going to try durian again, it would be here, in June.

Still, once we arrived at Combat Durian, my confidence disappeared. Neither my partner—who had never tried durian before—nor I felt confident about finishing an entire fruit.

When I admitted to one of the staff members that we were complete beginners, she smiled and said,

“You don’t have to buy a whole one. We just packed some fresh Musang King durian. Start with that.”

The package cost SGD 26.00.

When I nervously took my first bite, my immediate thought was:

“It doesn’t stink.”

That alone came as a huge surprise.

Every durian I had eaten before had smelled like rotten onions, making me instinctively recoil.

This one was completely different.

Saying it “didn’t stink” isn’t entirely accurate. It certainly had a fermented aroma, but instead of making me want to gag, it reminded me ever so slightly of soy sauce or miso.

The texture was incredibly rich, creamy, and smooth without feeling overly heavy. The sweetness wasn’t as bold as a mango’s, but it was refined and elegant, accompanied by a faint bitterness that gave it real depth.

It was unlike any fruit I’d ever tasted.

And honestly…

It was delicious.

I think this trip may have turned me into a durian fan.

Since my partner had absolutely no preconceived ideas about durian, he simply ate it happily, saying over and over how good it was.

The only downside was what happened afterward.

Although the durian was wonderful, my stomach felt unusually full for the rest of the evening, and every time I burped, I could still taste and smell the durian.

Maybe we got a little too carried away.

Haji Lane

After leaving Combat Durian, we took a Grab to Haji Lane.

The street had a lively atmosphere filled with colorful murals, cafés, bars, and young tourists. Personally, though, it felt a little too loud and crowded for our taste, so we didn’t stay very long.

Afterward, we returned to our hotel and headed to the airport.

Jewel Changi Airport and Heading Home

At the airport, we explored Jewel Changi Airport, an enormous shopping and entertainment complex.

It was incredibly crowded, but it was so large that you could probably do all of your shopping and dining there without ever leaving the building.

The enormous indoor waterfall cascading from the ceiling in the center of the complex was spectacular.

One last thing I noticed about this trip:

I never used cash—not even once.

Every single payment was made with my credit card, and I never found myself wishing I had brought cash.

Breakfast and Arrival at Bird Paradise

On our second day, we took the MRT and a local bus to Bird Paradise in the Mandai Wildlife Reserve.

Among the restaurants near the entrance, we chose a café called han’s union, where we had a kaya toast set for breakfast. From our window seat, we could look out over a small stream and watch little birds resting in the trees along the water while we ate. It was a peaceful way to start the day.

We had already purchased our tickets through the official website, so we simply showed our electronic tickets at the entrance. We had also added the lorikeet feeding activity to our admission tickets.

Exploring Bird Paradise and Lorikeet Feeding

Just inside the entrance was an area where birds were kept in large aviaries, and we first admired the colorful birds through the wire mesh. However, I think the true highlight of Bird Paradise is its free-flight aviaries. The park is like one enormous birdcage that people can walk through while birds fly freely around them. Some birds were friendly enough to come close, while others preferred to rest high up in the trees. The binoculars my partner had brought turned out to be incredibly useful for birdwatching.

We had reserved the lorikeet feeding activity that started at 11:00 a.m. After arriving at Lory Loft, we showed our electronic tickets and received numbered tickets. When the activity began, participants were called in numerical order. Our numbered tickets were collected, and each of us was handed a feeding cup. As soon as the staff filled it with nectar, the impatient lorikeets swarmed toward us all at once. It was noisy, adorable, exciting, and absolutely chaotic—in the best possible way. It truly felt like paradise, thanks to the birds.

A photographer was also present during the activity, and visitors could purchase the photos afterward. If you plan to buy them, I’d recommend putting on your best smile.

The fun came to an abrupt end the moment our nectar was gone. The lorikeets instantly lost all interest in us and flew off to find someone else with food. My partner and I spent a blissful few moments surrounded by brilliantly colored birds. We were happy, excited, and completely captivated. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that dozens of lorikeets eagerly lick the nectar at the same time, so it splashes around and can easily stain your clothes.

After the feeding activity, a heavy tropical downpour suddenly began, so we took shelter in a café near the entrance. We enjoyed bird-shaped bread and hot coffee while waiting for the rain to ease. The bread had the gentle flavor and appearance of homemade bread, with just a faint hint of the aroma that comes from natural fermentation.

Once the rain became lighter, we continued exploring the park.

By the way, Bird Paradise operates a free shuttle bus that runs back and forth around the park. The walking distance isn’t particularly long, but we still rode it several times. After all, it was free, and riding it was part of the fun.

After spending as much time birdwatching as we wanted, we stopped by the gift shop near the entrance. Immediately to the left was a photo counter. We handed the card we had received from the photographer to a staff member, who then displayed all of our photos on a monitor. After choosing our favorites, the staff printed them and placed them in presentation folders. We selected the package that included two printed photos, which cost SGD 60. As a bonus, purchasing the package also allowed us to download all of the digital photos.

The gift shop was full of irresistible items for bird lovers, much to my partner’s delight. We ended up buying a mug and a passport holder.

Desserts and Chicken Rice

Later, when we felt a little hungry, we stopped by BlackBall, a café near the entrance, and ordered winter melon tea and douhua for a total of SGD 15.40. The winter melon tea tasted exactly like what I imagine traditional herbal medicine would taste like. My partner kept saying, “Hmm… it’s good… I think it’s good… I guess this is what herbal drinks taste like… yeah… I think it’s good,” without ever fully committing to saying it was delicious. Still, it seemed to grow on him. On the other hand, he absolutely loved the douhua and happily finished it. I enjoyed it just as much, especially the chewy taro balls made from sweet potatoes.

From Mandai Wildlife Reserve, we took the shuttle bus (SGD 2.50) back to Khatib MRT Station and then rode the MRT to Isetan Scotts. Our goal was to buy individually wrapped snacks in large quantities to hand out to my coworkers back home.

Before shopping, however, we noticed a food court on the basement level of the building and decided to try Hainanese chicken rice. Neither of us had been particularly interested in it, but every travel guide described it as one of Singapore’s signature dishes. We were a little hungry, and there was a food court right in front of us, so we figured, “Why not?”

The result?

It was much better than we had expected.

The rice was light and fluffy, the chicken was wonderfully tender, and we finished the entire plate in no time.

SPECTRA and Garden Rhapsody

That evening, we went to watch SPECTRA – A Light & Water Show at the Event Plaza outside The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. The show starts every night at 8:00 p.m., so we arrived about fifteen minutes early. Even then, a large crowd had already gathered to save seats. The fifteen-minute performance combined fountains, music, and projection mapping. Our impression was simply, “Well… it was okay.”

Afterward, my partner and I agreed that it had been “pretty decent” and walked to Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay. We were there for Garden Rhapsody, the light show that begins at 8:45 p.m. and synchronizes the Supertrees with music.

This one completely exceeded our expectations.

Watching two shows back-to-back was a little exhausting, but the crowd was smaller than at SPECTRA, and the illuminated Supertrees were absolutely breathtaking. We enjoyed every minute of it.

The show ended around 9:00 p.m., and we hoped to grab a light meal nearby. Unfortunately, every restaurant had already passed its last order. The taxi stand was packed with people, so we walked to the nearest MRT station and took the train back to our hotel.

Arrival in Singapore

My partner and I traveled to Singapore.

We had two goals for this trip. The first was to visit Bird Paradise, located within Mandai Wildlife Reserve. The second was to eat a perfectly ripe durian.

We flew from Haneda Airport’s international terminal to Singapore on ANA Flight NH843. The flight departed at 12:40 a.m. Japan Standard Time and arrived at around 7:00 a.m. local time, making the journey just under seven hours.

From the airport, we took the MRT (Singapore’s subway system) to Downtown Station, the nearest station to our hotel, The Westin Singapore.

One thing we appreciated about the MRT was that we could simply tap our credit cards to ride. For this trip, we planned to get by without using any cash at all, relying entirely on our credit cards.

When we arrived at The Westin Singapore, our room was not ready yet, so we left our luggage at the hotel and headed out to explore the city.

Breakfast at Marina Bay Sands

We decided to take a leisurely morning walk to Marina Bay Sands, which now feels even more iconic than the Merlion as the symbol of Singapore. Unfortunately, the sky was gray, and it started raining along the way. Our first morning in Singapore was not blessed with good weather.

We reached The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands at around 9:30 a.m. Since it was still early, most of the stores were closed. The food court, however, had several stalls open, so we decided to have breakfast there.

Both my partner and I ordered laksa, and it was absolutely delicious. I suppose the simplest way to describe it is coconut curry noodle soup. It’s the kind of dish that’s almost impossible to make taste bad.

There was also a dessert stand in the food court, so we ordered bubur cha cha and mango pomelo sago. Both desserts looked amazing, and I was convinced they would be exactly the kind of sweets I’d love. In reality, though, my reaction was more along the lines of, “They’re not bad, but they’re not quite my favorite.” Even so, I came away thinking that I’d probably enjoy them much more if I tried them at a different shop.

Incidentally, at food courts in Singapore, diners are expected to return their trays and dishes to designated return stations after eating. I’ve heard that leaving your tray behind can even result in a fine.

Exploring Cloud Forest

After breakfast, we walked to Cloud Forest in Gardens by the Bay. Google Maps suggested a street-level route, and we followed it, but that turned out to be a mistake. We later learned that from the shopping mall where we had breakfast, we could have gone through the underground passage connected to Bayfront MRT Station and reached Gardens by the Bay without having to deal with either the heat or the rain.

When we arrived at Cloud Forest, we bought our tickets at the ticket counter. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by a spectacular indoor waterfall nearly 35 meters (115 feet) tall. The waterfall itself was certainly impressive, but what struck me first was how cool the air felt. It was refreshingly comfortable.

When we visited, Cloud Forest happened to be hosting a collaboration with the film Jurassic World, so dinosaur sculptures had been placed around the waterfall. Neither my partner nor I have seen the movie, so we weren’t particularly excited by the collaboration itself, but we still admired how well the displays had been made while enjoying the beautiful plants and flowers throughout the conservatory.

The attraction begins at the top of an artificial mountain, and visitors gradually walk their way down. Everywhere we looked, lush vegetation flourished and colorful flowers bloomed in abundance. It genuinely felt like paradise. I found myself hoping that the Pure Land I’m supposed to reach someday will also be a place overflowing with flowers.

There were also plenty of pitcher plants and Venus flytraps, two kinds of plants that both of us especially enjoy. If you’re interested in plants, I think you’ll have a wonderful time at Cloud Forest. One thing I did notice, however, was that there weren’t many places to sit and rest.

True to its name, Cloud Forest fills with mist every two hours (10:00 a.m., noon, 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 8:00 p.m.). We were able to experience this effect ourselves, and watching the plants disappear into the mist created an atmosphere that was both dreamlike and beautiful.

Flower Dome and Lunch at Asia Square Food Garden

After leaving Cloud Forest, we visited the neighboring Flower Dome. During our visit, it was hosting a special exhibition called Blue Beauties, where we were able to admire countless hydrangeas.

After leaving Gardens by the Bay, we headed to Asia Square Food Garden, a food court near The Westin Singapore, for lunch. We ordered a set that came with noodles and xiaolongbao. Unfortunately, the noodles were clumped together, and the soup dumplings were only lukewarm. It wasn’t terrible, but it was nothing memorable either.

Chili Crab at Red House Seafood

After checking into the hotel, we took some time to relax and wait out the rain before heading out for dinner. We had decided to try Singapore’s famous chili crab and chose Red House Seafood, which had been recommended in our guidebook. We took the MRT to the restaurant.

When we opened the menu, we saw that the chili crab was listed at “market price.” We asked a server, who told us it was SGD 98 per kilogram. It seemed fairly expensive, but after coming all the way to Singapore, there was no way we were leaving without ordering it.

The menu also mentioned a half-size option, so I asked if we could order that instead. The server confidently replied, “You two can handle it. One kilogram will be fine.” Taking her advice, we ordered a one-kilogram crab. When it arrived, we were greeted with an entire large crab served whole in a generous amount of chili sauce. The portion was enormous.

The crab was delicious. Still, I worried that eating nothing but crab might become repetitive, so we decided to order another dish: a fish called Marble Goby.

The menu listed it at SGD 128 per kilogram, so I asked the server, “One kilogram sounds like too much for us. Could we have half a kilogram instead?” She smiled and replied, “No problem. One kilogram is fine for you two. Thank you.”

So, before we knew it, we had ordered a one-kilogram Marble Goby as well.

By the end of the meal, we were absolutely stuffed. The total bill came to SGD 204.60, which was certainly expensive. Still, the crab was excellent, and the white fish we added turned out to be even better than expected, so in the end, I considered the meal well worth it.

三日目。シンガポール旅行の最終日は晴天に恵まれたので、朝からマーライオンを観に行った。

日本ではかつて世界三大がっかりスポットの一つとして知られていたマーライオン。さぞかしがっかりさせてくれるのだろうと期待して訪れてみたのだが、対岸にマリーナベイ・サンズを望む白亜のマーライオンは、想像よりも大きくて立派で、吐き出す水量も十分だった。全然がっかりしなかったので、逆にがっかりした。

後日、ネットでマーライオンについて調べてみたところ、「がっかり」と言われた主な理由は、

・設置場所の関係で正面から像を見られなかったこと

・ポンプの故障で水がたびたび止まっていたこと

以上の二点が大きな原因として挙げられていた。現在では移設され、水も常時吐き出すように改善されているため、「がっかりスポット」とは言えない場所へ様変わりしているとのこと。

マーライオン観光を満喫した後、我々はRaffles Place Parkまで歩き、Ya Kun Kaya Toastに入った。フレンチトーストと蒸し食パンを注文したのだが、どちらも美味しかった。

朝食の後はウェスティン シンガポールに戻ってプールで泳いだ。プールサイドではレズビアンカップルがスマホで互いを撮り合っており、シャッターを切るたびに「Wow, super sexy!」「Gorgeous!」と褒め言葉を掛け合っていたので、二人とも素晴らしいカメラマンだと思った。

午後はLau Pa Satというホーカーに立ち寄った。広大で清潔なフードコートといった感じだが、エアコンがないため、暑さに弱い人には少し厳しい場所という印象を受けた。

我々はここでは飲食をせず、友人がお勧めしてくれた店へバクテーを食べに行った。NG AH SIO Bak Kut Tehという店である。バクテーはシンガポールのガイドブックに必ず載っている名物料理らしいが、食べてまず思ったのは「スープに胡椒が効き過ぎている」だった。ただ、油条をスープに浸して食べると、あら不思議、めちゃくちゃに美味しかった。「煮込まれて柔らかくなった豚肉よりも、スープを吸った油条の方が美味しい」というのがおれの感想である。バクテー二杯、米、油条、ソフトドリンク二杯を頼んで43.76SGD（5,674円）だった。

バクテーを食べた後、隣のコンバット ドリアンに入った。

おれは今回の旅で、シンガポールでドリアンを食べることを目的の一つにしていた。過去に日本、タイ、ベトナムで三度ドリアンを食べたことがあるのだが、そのたびに「うっ……厳しい」という感想に終わっていた。でも、おれにはドリアンが大好きだと豪語する友人がいて、彼女の話を聞くたびに、「おれは単に美味しいドリアンに出会っていないだけなのではないか」と思っていた。

シンガポールでは六月に完熟して自然落下したドリアンが多く出回るらしく、ドリアンへの再挑戦は六月にシンガポールで、と以前から決めていた。

ただ、「いざドリアン」と意気込んでコンバット ドリアンに到着したものの、丸ごと一個を恋人（ドリアン初体験）と食べ切る自信はなく、スタッフに「我々はスーパービギナーなのだが」と相談したところ、「さっき実をさばいて小分けにしたものがあるので、それを買えばいい。種類は猫山王だ」と教えてくれた。パックされたドリアンは26.00SGD（3,371円）だった。

恐る恐る口にしたドリアンだったが、まず「臭くない」と思った。これはかなり衝撃だった。過去に食べたドリアンは腐った玉ねぎのような刺激臭があり、毎回「うっ」と言葉を失ってきたのだが、今回食べたものは全然臭くない。

「臭くない」は正確な表現ではない。嘔吐を催すような匂いではなく、醤油や味噌をほのかに思わせる発酵香がある、と言えばいいのだろうか。口当たりは驚くほどクリーミーでねっとりしているが、重たいわけではない。マンゴーのような強烈な甘さではないものの、上品でしっかりとした甘みがあり、その中にほのかな苦みも感じられる。唯一無二の、特別感のある果物だった。すごく美味しかった。おれは、この旅でドリアンのことを好きになれたかもしれない。

恋人はドリアンに対して予備知識や偏見が全くなかったので、「美味しい、美味しい」と言って食べていた。

ドリアンは確かに美味しかった。ただ、その日は夜まで胃が張っているような、もたれているような感覚が続き、げっぷまでドリアンの香りだったのには少しまいった。調子に乗って食べ過ぎたのかもしれない。

コンバット ドリアンを後にした我々は、GrabでHaji Laneへ移動した。ここは若い観光客向けのにぎやかな通りという印象で、我々にはあまり合わなかったため、早々に退散した。

その後、ホテルへ戻って空港へ向かった。

空港にはJewel Changi Airportという巨大なショッピングモールがあり、ものすごい人混みだったが、買い物や食事は全てここで済ませられそうなほどの規模だった。モール中央にある、天井から流れ落ちる巨大な滝が実に見事だった。

そういえば、この旅では現金を一切使わなかった。支払いは全てクレジットカードで事足りた。

二日目は、MRTと路線バスを乗り継ぎ、マンダイ・ワイルドライフ・リザーブ内のバードパラダイスへ行った。

エントランス前にいくつかある飲食店のうち、「han’s union」というカフェでカヤトーストセットを食べた。このカフェでは窓際の席から小川を眺めることができ、川辺の木で羽を休める小鳥を見ながら朝食を摂ることができた。

我々は公式ホームページでチケットを購入しておいたので、エントランスでスタッフに電子チケットを見せて入園した。ちなみに我々は、インコの餌やりアクティビティを追加したチケット（7,646円／大人ひとり）を購入しておいた。

入ってすぐの場所には、大型ケージで飼育されている鳥の鑑賞ゾーンがあり、まずは金網越しにかわいい鳥たちを愛でた。しかし、このバードパラダイスは、何といっても鳥の放し飼いゾーンが見どころだと思う。言うなれば、大きな大きな鳥かごの中に人間が入り、歩道を歩きながら鳥を眺められる施設である。人懐っこい鳥もいれば、遠くの木で休んでいる鳥もいて、恋人が持参した双眼鏡は鳥を観察するのに大変役に立った。

我々は11時開始のインコの餌付けアクティビティを予約しておいた。会場のローリー・ロフトに到着し、スタッフに電子チケットを見せると番号札を渡された。開始時刻になると番号順に呼び出され、番号札が回収されるとともに餌付け用の容器が手渡された。スタッフがその容器にインコの餌を注いでくれるのだが、しびれを切らしたインコたちが一斉に群がってきて、騒がしいやら、可愛いやら、楽しいやらで、まさにバードによるパラダイス状態だった。

このアクティビティでは撮影スタッフがおり、写真データを後から購入できる。良いカメラで撮ってもらった写真を買うつもりなら、キメ顔で写真に納まっておいた方が良いだろう。

楽しい餌付けアクティビティは、餌が尽きた瞬間にインコたちから見向きもされなくなるので、そこで終了となる。おれと恋人は極彩色のインコたちを間近で鑑賞でき、嬉しい、楽しい、大好き状態の至福のひとときを過ごすことができた。ちなみに、大勢のインコが一心不乱に餌を舐めに来たので、餌が飛び散って服が汚れた。

餌付けアクティビティを楽しんだ後、土砂降りのスコールになったので、我々はエントランス近くのカフェへ避難した。鳥を象ったパンを齧り、温かいコーヒーを飲みながら雨宿りをした。パンは、生地の発酵臭がかすかに残る手作りパンという感じで、優しい見た目と味だった。

雨が弱まったので、園内散策を再開した。

そういえば、園内には歩いてもたかが知れている距離を往復するシャトルバスが運行されている。我々も何度か利用した。無料だし、シャトルバスに乗るのは楽しいからだ。

満足いくまで鳥を眺め回した我々は、最後にエントランス脇にあるショップで買い物をすることにした。入ってすぐ左手にフォトカウンターがあり、餌付けアクティビティのカメラマンから渡されたカードをスタッフに渡すと、モニターに我々の写真データが表示された。それらの中から気に入った写真を選ぶと、スタッフがプリントアウトして台紙に入れて渡してくれる。我々は2枚選択できるプランにしたので、60SGD（7,782円）だった。ちなみに、写真購入者は全ての写真データをダウンロードできる。

このミュージアムショップで売られている商品は、鳥好きの恋人の購買意欲を大変強く刺激するものばかりで、我々はマグカップやパスポートケースを購入した。

小腹が空いたので、エントランス付近のBlackBallというカフェで、冬瓜茶と豆花（合計15.40SGD：1,993円）を飲み食いした。冬瓜茶は「The 薬膳」といった味で、恋人は「うん……美味しい……美味しい気がする。薬膳って……こういう味……うん……美味しい気がする」と言いながらも、決して美味しいと言い切らなかったのだが、まずまずだった様子。しかし、恋人は豆花をたいそう気に入ったようで、パクパク食べていた。おれも豆花が美味しくて気に入ったし、トッピングの甘藷から作られた芋圓もとても美味しかった。

マンダイ・ワイルドライフ・リザーブからシャトルバス（2.50SGD：324円）を利用して、MRT南北線のKhatib駅まで戻り、そこからMRTに乗って伊勢丹スコッツ店へ移動した。目的は、同僚に配るための、個包装で個数の多い菓子を買うことである。

ただ、お土産選びの前に、伊勢丹が入っているビルの地下1階にフードコートがあったので、海南鶏飯（チキンライス）を食べた。おれも恋人もチキンライスに特段の興味はなかったのだが、どの旅行ガイドブックを読んでも「シンガポールの名物料理」として紹介されていたし、少し小腹も空いていたし、目の前にフードコートもあったので、一皿注文してみた。結果、「ふーん、やるじゃん」といった感想で、なかなか美味しかった。お米はさらさらで、鶏肉はしっとりしており、あっという間に完食した。

夜は、マリーナベイ・サンズのショッピングモール「The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands」の海側広場「Event Plaza」で行われている「SPECTRA – A Light & Water Show」という噴水ショーを観に行った。毎晩20時にショーが始まるので、開始15分前に広場へ到着したのだが、既に多くの人が場所取りのために座り込んでいた。SPECTRAは、噴水と音響、プロジェクションマッピングを組み合わせた約15分間のショーで、「まぁ、こんなものか。」という程度の感想だった。

恋人と「まぁまぁだったね」と話しながら徒歩でガーデンズ・バイ・ザ・ベイの「Supertree Grove」（Googleマップ）へ移動。20時45分開始の「Garden Rhapsody」という、ツリーが音楽に合わせてライトアップされるショーを観に行ったのだが、こちらはすごく良かった。ショーのハシゴは体力的にしんどかったが、先ほどの噴水ショーより人混みも控えめだったし、ツリーの音楽に合わせたライトアップが本当にきれいで楽しかった。

ショーが21時頃に終わったので、広場付近の飲食店で軽食と飲み物をと思ったが、店はどこもラストオーダーの時間を過ぎていた。タクシー乗り場はものすごく混雑していたので、我々は駅まで歩き、MRTに乗って宿へ帰った。

恋人とシンガポールへ行った。

今回の旅の目的は二つ。一つ目は、マンダイ・ワイルドライフ・リザーブ内のバードパラダイス（公式HP）へ行くこと。二つ目は、完熟ドリアンを食べることである。

我々は羽田空港の国際線ターミナルから、全日空NH843便でシンガポールへ飛んだ。日本時間の0時40分発、現地時間の7時頃着だったので、搭乗時間は7時間弱だった。

空港からはMRT（地下鉄）を利用して、滞在先のウェスティン シンガポールの最寄り駅であるダウンタウン駅まで移動した。

MRTはクレジットカードのタッチ決済で乗車できたのが便利だった。我々は今回、現金を一切使わず、クレジットカードのみで旅行を乗り切るつもりである。

今回の旅の宿であるウェスティン シンガポールに到着したが、まだチェックインできなかったので、ホテルに荷物を預けて街に繰り出した。

今やマーライオンよりもシンガポールの顔になっている感のあるマリーナベイ・サンズまで、朝の散歩がてら歩いてみたのだが、空は鈍色で、途中から雨に降られた。シンガポール旅行最初の朝は、天候に恵まれなかった。

マリーナベイ・サンズに併設されているショッピングモール、ザ・ショップスに9時30分頃到着したのだが、早朝のためほとんどの店は閉まっていた。ただ、フードコートは数店舗営業していたので、そこで朝食を摂ることにした。

おれも恋人もラクサを食べてみたのだが、これがめちゃくちゃ美味しい。ココナッツミルクカレー麺と言えばよいのだろうか。不味くなりようがない料理だと思った。

フードコート内にデザートスタンドがあったので、ボーボーチャチャとマンゴーポメロサゴを注文してみた。両者ともにめちゃくちゃ美味しそうで、「絶対におれが好きなタイプのデザートだ」と思ったものの、実際は「そうでもなかったな」という感想に落ち着いた。ただ、「店を変えたら絶対に美味しいだろう」という予感と期待は残されたままである。

ちなみに、シンガポールのフードコートでは、使用した食器を自身で返却口へ運ぶことが求められている。トレイや食器を放置すると、罰金の対象になることがあるらしい。

朝食を済ませた我々は、歩いてガーデンズ・バイ・ザ・ベイ内のクラウドフォレスト（公式HP）に向かった。Googleマップが地上ルートを提案したのでそれに従ったのだが、失敗だった。我々がいたショッピングモールからは、ベイフロント駅から地下通路を通れば、暑さや雨を避けてガーデンズ・バイ・ザ・ベイまで移動できることを、後になって知った。

クラウドフォレストに到着し、チケットセンターでチケットを購入した。入館すると、まずは高さ約35メートルの人工滝と、その水しぶきが出迎えてくれる。その高さと迫力はさることながら、なによりもまず、涼しい。涼しくて気持ちが良い。

我々が訪れたときは映画『ジュラシック・ワールド』とコラボしていたらしく、この人工滝にも恐竜のオブジェが置かれていた。おれも恋人も『ジュラシック・ワールド』を見ていないので特段の感動はなかったものの、「良くできてるな」と思いながら、きれいでかわいらしい植物を鑑賞するついでに、恐竜のオブジェも眺めて歩いた。

このクラウドフォレストは、人工山の頂上まで移動して歩いて降りてくるというものなのだが、どこを見ても生命力にあふれた植物が繁茂し、きれいな花がたくさん咲いていて、まじで極楽かと思った。おれがいつの日か往生する予定の極楽浄土も、たくさんの花が咲いている世界であってほしい。

我々の好きなウツボカズラやハエトリソウもたくさん植えられていた。植物を鑑賞するのが好きな人なら、ここクラウドフォレストは本当に楽しめると思う。ただ、座って休める場所はそれほど多くないという印象だった。

このクラウドフォレストは、名前のとおり2時間おき（10時・12時・14時・16時・18時・20時）に温室内が霧に包まれるという演出があり、我々も雲霧林を体験することができた。霧に包まれる植物も幻想的で、美しかった。

クラウドフォレストを出て、隣にあるフラワードームにも足を運んだのだが、こちらは「Blue Beauties」という企画展の最中だったらしく、たくさんのアジサイを見ることができた。

ガーデンズ・バイ・ザ・ベイを後にした我々は、ウェスティン シンガポール近くのフードコート、Asia Square Food Gardenへ移動して昼食を食べた。麺と小籠包のセットを注文したのだが、麺が全然ほぐれておらず、小籠包もぬるくて、「まぁこんなものかな」と思いながら食べた。

ホテルにチェックインし、雨宿りも兼ねて少しゆっくりしてから、晩御飯はチリクラブを食べに行くことにした。ガイドブックに掲載されていたレッドハウスに決め、MRTに乗って出かけた。

店に着いてメニューを開くと、チリクラブは「時価」と書いてある。店員さんに尋ねると、98SGD／1,000gとのこと。結構高いと思ったものの、ここまで来て注文しないという選択肢はない。

メニューを見るとハーフサイズもあると書かれていたので、店員さんに注文したいと伝えたところ、「君たちならいける。1kgで大丈夫」と太鼓判を押されたので、1kgのカニを注文した。チリクラブは、大きなカニが一杯丸ごと入っており、ものすごいボリュームだった。

美味しい。美味しいが、カニだけだと飽きると思い、メニューにあったMarble Gobyという魚を注文することにした。

店員さんに「128SGD／1,000gとあるけど、我々にはtoo muchだよね？ ハーフキロ欲しい」と伝えたところ、「OK、大丈夫。君たちなら1kgで問題ない。サンキュー」と言われ、Marble Gobyも1kgのオーダーになった。

結果、腹がはちきれんばかりに膨れ、値段も204.60SGD（26,498円）と結構な金額になったのだが、カニが美味しかったし、追加で注文した白身魚が特に美味しかったので、ヨシとする。
