Visiting the Wisteria Festival at Kameido Tenjin Shrine

I love wisteria flowers, so I had always wanted to visit the Wisteria Festival at Kameido Tenjin Shrine.

Kameido Tenjin has apparently been famous for its wisteria since the Edo period, and it was even depicted in ukiyo-e prints by Utagawa Hiroshige.

On a clear day in late April, my partner and I headed there together.

Near the shrine, the traditional sweets shop Funabashiya also had a wisteria trellis outside its storefront, with several clusters of purple flowers hanging down.

Even though it was a weekday, there was already a huge line outside the shop. Seeing that crowd, we prepared ourselves for how busy the festival itself might be.

When we finally arrived at Kameido Tenjin, our prediction turned out to be correct. The shrine grounds were packed with people, and it was difficult to quietly enjoy the flowers.

To be honest, the wisteria was not yet in full bloom either. We may have visited slightly too early.

There was a temporary Funabashiya stand inside the shrine grounds, so we bought a seasonal “Tenjin Fuji Anmitsu” dessert along with their regular kuzumochi.

Cooling Off at Sumida Coffee

It was an unusually hot day, so after leaving the shrine, we stopped by Sumida Coffee nearby for iced coffee.

The coffee, served in beautiful Edo Kiriko glassware, was excellent. The sake lees and chocolate scone was also delicious.

The café itself was small and quiet, the kind of place that immediately makes you want to return someday.

Tempura Lunch in Shibamata

Afterward, we walked all the way to Tokyo Skytree, then took the subway from Oshiage Station to Shibamata Station on the Keisei Line.

Wanting to eat something first, we stopped at 大和家(yamatoya)along the approach to the temple and ordered tendon.

The rice portion was a little small for an adult man, but the tempura, fried in sesame oil, was wonderfully crisp and fragrant. I finished it almost immediately, almost like eating snacks rather than a full meal.

Even after finishing, I still wanted more. I wanted seconds. But I swallowed that feeling and left the restaurant.

The regular-sized bowl cost ¥1,200, and the restaurant accepted cash only.

Discovering Shibamata Taishakuten

When we arrived at Shibamata Taishakuten, bright red azaleas were in full bloom, and they were stunning.

This was my first visit there, and I learned that “Shibamata Taishakuten” is actually a Nichiren Buddhist temple formally called Daikyoji Temple. Within its grounds stands the Taishakudo Hall, where Taishakuten is enshrined.

I had not known any of that before, so it was genuinely interesting to learn.

The exterior walls of the Taishakudo were covered with extraordinary carvings. By paying the admission fee (¥400 for adults, cashless payment accepted), visitors could examine them up close.

The ticket also included entry to the Suikeien Garden, the temple’s Japanese garden.

This garden impressed me far more than I expected.

First of all, there were very few people, which allowed us to quietly sit and admire the scenery. The polished wooden floors, the carefully maintained grass and plants, and the pond viewed from the covered corridor were all beautiful.

The clear blue sky seemed to make the garden glow even more brightly.

Comparing Gardens

After leaving Shibamata Taishakuten, we visited 山本亭 Yamamoto-tei, a historic building operated by Katsushika City.

The place seemed to function mainly as a café, and the tatami rooms were crowded with visitors. It did not really feel like the kind of place where you could quietly appreciate a garden.

There was a poster saying that Yamamoto-tei’s garden had been ranked third in a 2024 American magazine ranking specializing in Japanese gardens.

Still, personally, I found Suikeien Garden at Shibamata Taishakuten far more beautiful.

Ending the Day with Dango

We left Yamamoto-tei fairly quickly and returned to the shopping street, where we entered 髙木屋老舗(takagiya).

We only wanted to eat a little dango, so we were hesitating over what to order when a staff member kindly told us, “It’s perfectly fine for two people to share one order.”

Grateful for her kindness, we ordered the three-dango set for ¥800 and shared it together.

亀戸天神社（公式HP）は江戸時代から藤の名所として有名で、歌川広重の浮世絵にも描かれていたらしい。おれは藤の花が好きなので、亀戸天神社の藤まつりに行きたいと常々思っており、四月下旬のよく晴れた日に、恋人と連れ立って亀戸天神社の藤まつりへ出かけた。

亀戸天神社の近くにある甘味処、船橋屋（公式HP）の軒先にも藤棚が設置されていて、藤の花が、申し訳程度のほんの数房垂れ咲いていた。平日にもかかわらず船橋屋には長蛇の列ができており、亀戸天神社の藤まつりの賑わいも相当なものだろうと、我々は身構えた。

亀戸天神社に到着すると、その予想は当たっていて、ものすごい人だかりで藤の花をゆっくり鑑賞することはできなかった。また、藤の花が「咲き誇っている」とは言い難く、我々の訪れた時期が少し早かったのかも知れない。

境内にも船橋屋の出店があったので、藤まつり期間の限定販売品である「天神藤あんみつ」と、通常メニューのくず餅を購入して食べた。見た目は藤の紫色だが、味や香りに藤を感じることはなかった。でも美味しかった。おれはくず餅が好きだ。

それにしても暑い日だったので、亀戸天神社を後にした我々は、近くのすみだ珈琲（公式HP）に立ち寄ってアイスコーヒーを飲んだ。江戸切子のグラスで供されたコーヒーは美味しく、酒粕とチョコレートのスコーンも美味しかった。こぢんまりとした店内は静かで居心地がよく、また行きたいと思えるカフェだった。

店を出た我々は東京スカイツリーまで歩き、押上駅から地下鉄に乗って京成線「柴又」駅へ移動した。

『まずは腹ごしらえを』と思い、参道にある大和家で天丼を食べた。ごはんの量は控えめで我々には少し物足りなかったが、ごま油で揚げた天ぷらはサクサクで香ばしく、お菓子を食べるような感覚で、ぱくぱくとあっという間に完食してしまった。まだ食べたい、もっと食べたい、お代わり！――そんな言葉を飲み込み店を後にした。並盛1,200円で、支払いは現金のみだった。

柴又帝釈天（公式HP）に到着すると、真っ赤なつつじが咲き誇っていて、とても綺麗だった。

おれは柴又帝釈天に初めてお参りしたのだが、ここは経栄山題経寺という日蓮宗のお寺であり、その境内に帝釈堂というお堂があって、そこに帝釈天が祀られているのだという。知らなかった。勉強になった。

帝釈堂の外側壁面には見事な彫刻が施されており、拝観料（大人400円・キャッシュレス決済可）を支払うと間近で鑑賞することができる。

拝観チケットは境内にある日本庭園邃渓園（すいけいえん）との共通券なので、こちらにも行ってみた。行ってみたところ、この庭園が本当に美しくて感動した。まず、人が少なく、庭を静かに眺めることができて良かった。次に、磨かれた床板も、青々とした芝生や植栽も、渡り廊下から眺める池も、すべてが丁寧に手入れをされているという感じがして美しかった。そして、抜けるような青空が、庭をさらに輝かせていたように思う。

柴又帝釈天を後にした我々は、葛飾区が管理運営している山本亭(公式HP)にも足を運んでみた。歴史のある建物らしいのだが、こちらは喫茶を中心に運営しているようで、座敷のあちこちに人が溢れており、ゆっくりと建築と庭を見るという雰囲気ではなかった。この山本亭の庭園が、アメリカの日本庭園専門誌のランキングで2024年の3位に選ばれたというポスターが貼られていたが、柴又帝釈天の邃渓園の方がよほど美しいと思った。

山本亭を早々に後にした我々は参道に戻り、髙木屋老舗という店に入った。名物である草団子を少しだけ味見したい気分だったので、何を注文しようかと迷っていたところ、店員さんが「二人で一つの注文でも構いませんよ」と助け船を出してくれた。その優しい心遣いに甘えて、800円のお団子三本セットを注文し、恋人と分け合って食べた。美味しかったです。

Searching for Food in Kyoto

At the end of April, I traveled to Kyoto with my parents.

Whenever we visit Kyoto, finding a place to eat is surprisingly difficult. If we were willing to spend unlimited money, we could probably find endless options, but that is not realistic for us.

We decided to go to Daimaru Kyoto Store, thinking that a department store would at least offer several choices. However, perhaps because of inflation or the increase in international tourism, the restaurant prices felt expensive to us.

In the end, we ate sukiyaki at the small eat-in corner of Mishima-tei in the basement food floor. The counter area only had a few seats, but the sukiyaki was excellent and far cheaper than eating in a full restaurant. We were very satisfied.

Deciding to Visit Heian Shrine

Back in our hotel room that evening, we started talking about where we wanted to go the next day.

When I said that I wanted to see wisteria flowers, my father replied, “I think Heian Shrine had a wisteria trellis.” That was how we decided to visit Heian Shrine.

The next morning, we left the hotel shortly before 11:00 a.m. and planned to have lunch at Kyoto Modern Terrace near Heian Shrine.

When we told the taxi driver our destination, he said he did not know the place. So we simply asked him to head toward Heian Shrine first. While talking with him on the way, he suddenly asked, “Do you mean ROHM Theatre Kyoto?” Once we clarified that, he knew exactly where to go and dropped us off safely.

An Unexpected Change of Lunch Plans

Unfortunately, when we arrived at Kyoto Modern Terrace, a staff member told us that the restaurant was closed for lunch because of a private party.

We quietly gave up and left, but as we were walking out, we happened to pass the bride and groom. We congratulated them, and both of them happily replied, “Thank you very much.”

That small interaction completely removed any disappointment I had about not being able to eat there.

Instead, we walked to Café ENFUSE inside the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art. We arrived shortly after 11:00 a.m., waited about five minutes, and were shown to a table.

The café was bright, and the food was very good.

However, I found the QR-code ordering system annoying. I simply prefer telling the staff, “This, this, and this, please.” It feels easier to me.

Still, I can understand why restaurants want to introduce those systems, especially when dealing with foreign tourists who may not speak Japanese fluently. It also prevents misunderstandings between staff and customers — or rather, any ordering mistakes become the customer’s responsibility instead of the restaurant’s.

Special Admission at Heian Shrine

After lunch, we headed to Heian Shrine and noticed a sign advertising a “Special Visit to Normally Closed Areas.”

We immediately signed up. Admission was ¥2,000 per person, and cashless payment was not accepted.

One of the most interesting parts was the explanation given by the Shinto priest. He explained that Heian Shrine enshrines Emperor Kanmu, the founder of Kyoto, and that shrines called “Jingu” are reserved exclusively for shrines dedicated to emperors.

He also explained the famous cherry tree and tachibana orange tree placed in front of the Daigokuden Hall. From a visitor’s perspective, the cherry tree stands on the right and the orange tree on the left. However, the names “Left Cherry Tree” and “Right Orange Tree” are based on the perspective of Emperor Kanmu sitting and facing south.

Another fascinating detail involved the northeast corner of one of the restricted buildings — the direction traditionally associated with the “demon gate” in Japanese geomancy. The corners of both the foundation and the roof were intentionally cut inward to symbolically “remove the demon’s horns” and protect the building from evil influences.

The Garden Without Wisteria

After the tour, we walked through the shrine garden.

The fresh green leaves were beautiful, and we even spotted what looked like a grey heron. A few Japanese irises were beginning to bloom as well.

Unfortunately, the wisteria trellis itself had no flowers yet.

Department Store Dining Became the Best Solution

After leaving Heian Shrine, we stopped by Kyoto Takashimaya and had an early dinner at the eat-in corner of 551 HORAI in the basement floor.

At this point, avoiding restaurants altogether and simply eating at department store food corners has become the best strategy for my parents and me when visiting Kyoto.

四月の終わりに、親と京都へ行った。

京都では食事をする場所を探すのにいつも苦労する。お金に糸目をつけなければいくらでも見つかるのだろうが、そういうわけにもいかない。

百貨店であれば選択肢も色々あるだろうと思って大丸京都店（公式ＨＰ）へ行ったのだが、物価高のせいかインバウンドのせいか、レストランの値段設定はおれたちにとっては高く感じられた。結局、デパ地下フロアにある三嶋亭のイートインコーナーですき焼きを食べた。カウンター席が数席しかない狭いコーナーだったが、供されたすき焼きは美味しく、レストランで食べるよりも断然安かったので、我々は大変満足した。

宿泊したホテルの部屋で、「明日どこか行きたい場所はあるか」という話になった。おれが「藤の花が見たい」と言ったところ、父が「確か平安神宮（公式ＨＰ）に藤棚があった気がする」と言うので、平安神宮に参拝することになった。

翌日、ホテルを出発したのが十一時前になったので、平安神宮近くにある京都モダンテラス（公式ＨＰ）で昼食を食べることにした。タクシーに乗って運転手に行き先を告げたところ、「その場所は知らない」と言われたので、とりあえず平安神宮に向けて走り始めてもらった。運転手と行き先について話しているうちに、「ロームシアター京都（公式ＨＰ）のことですか？それなら分かります」ということになり、無事に送り届けてもらうことができた。

京都モダンテラスに着いたが、「本日は貸切パーティーのため、ランチ営業はしていません」と店員に断られたため、すごすごと退散した。でも、店を去る際にここを会場として貸し切ったであろう新郎新婦とすれ違ったので、「おめでとうございます」と声を掛けたところ、新郎新婦ともに嬉しそうに「ありがとうございます」と返事をしてくださった。そのおかげで、店に入れなくて残念だという気持ちはなくなった。

徒歩圏内にある京都市京セラ美術館のカフェENFUSE（公式ＨＰ）に移動して、到着したのが十一時過ぎ。入店待ちの列ができていたが、五分程度待つとテーブル席に案内してもらった。店内は明るく、料理も美味しかった。ただ、ＱＲコードで注文をするシステムは煩わしかった。おれはあのシステムが嫌いだ。店員さんに「これとこれとこれをお願いします」と伝えた方が楽だと、おれは思うからだ。

ただ、日本語のネイティブ話者ではない、例えば海外旅行客との注文のやり取りに掛かる手間などを考えると、店側が導入したい意図も分かる。店員と客のやり取りにおけるオーダーミスも発生しないだろうし。というより、オーダーミスは常に客側のミスになるので、店側にとっては責任の所在がはっきりして楽なのだろうなと思う。

昼食を終えて平安神宮に向かったところ、「通常非公開 御垣内特別参拝」という立て看板があったので申し込みをした。参拝料金は一人二千円で、現金支払いのみだった。

案内をしてくださった神主さんの解説で面白かったのは、平安神宮は京都の始祖である桓武天皇を御祭神とする神社であり、「神宮」と呼ばれる神社は天皇が祀られている神社のみだという話だった。

他にも、大極殿の前に植えられている左近の桜と右近の橘と呼ばれる樹木は、参拝者視点だと右手に桜、左手に橘となる。しかし、桓武天皇が南面して座した際の視点に基づいているため、「左近の桜、右近の橘」という呼び方になるのだという。

さらに、通常非公開部分の建物の北東、つまり鬼門の方角を案内してくださった際には、基礎部分と屋根の角がわざわざ凹ませてあり、「鬼の角を取る」という意味を込めた鬼門封じになっているという話も面白かった。ダジャレ、つまりは言葉遊びなのだが、現代よりもずっと、「言葉」に力が宿っていると信じられていたのだろうと感じられた。

非公開部分の案内が終わった後は、神苑（日本庭園）を散策した。

新緑が目にまぶしく、アオサギ（？）がいたり、カキツバタ（？）がほんの少しだけ咲いていたりして楽しめた。でも、藤棚に藤の花は咲いていなかった。

平安神宮を後にした我々は、京都高島屋（公式ＨＰ）に寄り、地下フロアに入っている551HORAIのイートインコーナーで早めの晩御飯を食べた。

京都では、レストランに入らず、百貨店のイートインコーナーで食事を済ませるという行動が、我々親子にとっての最適解になっている。

ちなみに551では、イートインコーナーで食事をしている間に、持ち帰り用の豚まんや餃子の注文を受けて食後の会計時に渡してくれる。お土産を調達するのにも便利である。
